Former Baltimore Orioles legend shortstop, third baseman, holder of the MLB consecutive games record of 2632 and Hall of Famer, Cal Ripken Jr. has joined the DraftKings team as a special adviser to its board of directors, just like another former great, NBA superstar, Michael Jordan. The move comes at a great time for DraftKings and baseball betting fans alike with the 2021 spring training season just begun and betting now open.
Cal Ripken Jr. will lend his strategic insights to the board of directors and Chief Executive Officer on key company initiatives for the online sportsbook and in turn, will become a DraftKings equity holder just as Jordan did. The deal is seemingly directly pitched at the Maryland public, with Ripken having played his entire career with the Maryland-based Baltimore Orioles and still lives in the state. It is no coincidence that Maryland’s lawmakers are currently in debate as to what sports betting model that the Old-Line State will introduce after the state’s residents voted 67% to 33% in favor to legalize sports wagering in last November’s referendum.
“Cal Ripken Jr. embodies the qualities of perseverance and integrity we value so highly at DraftKings, and on behalf of the entire company I want to extend our warmest welcome to him as a special adviser,” Jason Robins, co-founder and Chief Executive DraftKings, wrote in a media announcement “We are inspired not only by Cal’s historic playing days, but also his current work to cultivate new generations of ballplayers. His unique combination of leadership, longevity and business acumen ensure that we will receive invaluable strategic counsel” Robins concluded.
Among a number of key business initiatives for DraftKings, Ripken will advise the online sportsbook’s board of directors and Chief Executive Officer on company strategy, activities and marketing development. Just in time for the upcoming MLB Opening Day for 2021, Ripken will begin his new role in familiar territory as baseball represents one of DraftKings’ key sports across both daily fantasy and online sports betting.
Cal Ripken Jnr’s Baseball Career seems him Uniquely Qualified
Ripken put together a Hall of Fame Major League Baseball career that seems him qualified for the MLB role with DraftKings like few others could be. The former Orioles slugger is one of only ten players in the history of the game of baseball with more than 400 home runs and 3000 hits. He has won a World Series championship, two AL MVP Awards, two AL All-Star Game MVP Awards, two Gold Gloves, appeared in 19 All-Star Games and won eight Silver Slugger Awards. For all that, Ripken Jnr is perhaps most well-known for his amazing streak of 2632 consecutive games played which earned him the tag of becoming baseball’s all-time “Iron Man”. Since retiring from MLB following the 2001 season, Ripken has reinvented himself as an engaging corporate speaker, a successful entrepreneur, author and philanthropist.
“The game I played for so many years has greatly benefitted from technological advances, and I cannot say enough about DraftKings’ importance as a catalyst, innovator and disruptor to enhance the game for modern baseball fans and others,” Cal Ripken Jr said.
“I am honored to bring my experience to DraftKings through this special advisor position and become part of a company that is already essential for fan engagement while still only scratching the surface of its full potential.”
