Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort has announced a partnership with one of the world’s primary online gaming leader, The Stars Group, to introduce land-based sports betting in the North Country Region of New York State. The agreement between the two parties also allows for The Stars Group to operate and brand online sports betting, poker and online casinos in New York on a first-skin basis, subject to the sports betting license availability, permutations in the New York State law and regulatory approvals.
Under the terms of the win-win mutual agreement, Mohawk will receive a revenue share from the operation of the applicable online sports betting offerings of The Stars Group, and in return, The Stars Group will receive a revenue share from the operation of the retail sportsbook from Mohawk.
In-house NY sports betting first; online to follow
This June, the New York Gaming Commission approved the rules and regulations for licensing and operating sports betting facilities in the Empire State. In anticipation of the New York’s lawmakers moving forward collectively with sports wagering regulations to allow for sports betting in the state, the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort began renovations some months ago, and have completed the construction of a 5,200 square-foot interactive venue.
The sports lounge is an unashamedly luxury one that features a HD video wall complete with 25 television screens and it’s anticipated to celebrate its grand opening sometime in the fall of 2019. Wagers are expected to be available through sports betting kiosks as soon as the state finalizes its sports wagering licensing and regulations.
Todd Papineau, General Manager of the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort expressed his excitement in offering in-house sports wagering and looks forward to potentially offering his clientele the added thrill of being the first online bettors in New State to experience online sports betting;
“We are thrilled to elevate the sports betting experience for our guests in our new sports lounge, a 5,200 square foot sports betting hub that will be ready during the NFL season. Once permissible in the state, we will be prepared to accept sports wagers through our new kiosks. With its online betting and gaming solutions and FOX Bet and PokerStars brands, we believe The Stars Group is the ideal partner for us and it is positioned to become a leader in the U.S. online betting and gaming industry. We are delighted to work with The Stars Group, one of the world’s largest, most licensed online gaming companies, to leverage the opportunity presented by online betting and gaming in the State of New York.”
Best prepared: Tribal Casinos ready for the NY Online Sports Betting Launch
Clearly then, The Stars Group and Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort are fully prepared for an early launch of the sports betting industry in the fall of this year.
However, New York’s legislators couldn’t agree on voting on mobile and online betting at this stage, and as a result, online sports wagering in the Empire State has been deferred until the beginning of the 2020 legislative session in January, when New York’s residents could potentially be permitted to begin legal sports wagering from home.
Online Sports wagering proponents, including the upstate Tribal Casinos, say online sports betting will earn more revenue for the state of New York and do more to compete with and deter organized crime and illegal betting.
The future is now and New York’s Tribal casinos are more than ready to navigate the way through online sports wagering’s uptake.
