The 2021 Academy Awards ceremony is only a few weeks away, and New Jersey’s online sportsbooks are preparing for the movies’ biggest night with some spectacular early betting opportunities for Garden State’s betting fans. While most New Jersey online sportsbooks like FanDuel, BetMGM and SugarHouse will eventually have odds on offer across all the Academy’s voting categories, their markets will open much later than the Garden State’s online betting specialist for the Academy Awards, the excellent 888Sport. Futures betting markets are now open with 888Sport, so without any further ado let’s run through 2021’s biggest Oscars betting categories and who are the favorites to home the big prizes and which categories offer some of the best specials for an underdog win, just like last year’s big surprise Best Picture winner, ‘Parasite’. (All odds current as 9 March 2021 – subject to change). Oscars Betting 2021 In 2019, New Jersey made history when it became the first state in U.S. betting history to accept legal wagers on the Academy Awards. The 2021 Oscars are coming soon and the very best of the betting action is snared early, when the odds are at their most attractive. Many NJ sportsbooks will offer betting markets across all the entire range of Oscars categories, while some sportsbooks may prefer to specialize by sticking to the tried and true more popular betting market categories like Best Director, Best Picture and Best Actor and Actress respectively. 2021 Oscars – The Where & When The 93rd annual Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, April 25 2021, after being postponed from the original February 28 date, due to the global pandemic. Known colloquially as the Oscars, they are hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and are widely considered the movie industry’s most prestigious awards for artistic achievement and technical merit. The big event is expected to be held at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and other global locations live via satellite. The film industry’s big night will be televised live on ABC in the U.S. at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The Big 6 Oscar Betting Categories Best Actor Best Actress Best Supporting Actor Best Supporting Actress Best Director Best Picture 2021’s Best Actor & Best Actress Viola Davis (-160) and Chadwick Boseman (-400) are both big favorites to take home the gong in their respective acting categories. Both starred in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, where a fearless black jazz singer stands up for her rights against the will of her white manager for control over her own music. If either Davis or Boseman fail to win their respective acting award, it would come as a shock. Best outsiders; Anthony Hopkin (+350) to win Best Actor for ‘The Father’. Carey Mulligan (+275) for ‘Promising Young Woman’ 2021’s Best Supporting Actor & Best Supporting Actress Longtime favorite with the Academy, Jodie Foster has her chance to win her third Oscar for her superb turn in the ‘The Mauritanian’ seeing her as Best Supporting Actress favorite and she is worth placing a wager on at -2500. Sacha Baron Cohen for his superb portrayal of ‘Flower Power’ activist Abie Hoffman in Aaron Sorkin’s ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ is an almost unbackable favorite (also at -2500). Look out for Leslie Odom Jr’s turn ( +1000) as legendary soul singer Sam Cooke to be your best chance of an underdog win. 2021’s Best Director Chloe Zhao is favorite to win the Best Director award for her work behind the camera for ‘Nomadland’ (where an old woman travels across the American West during the Great Depression) and is very short in the odds at -450. To track down more betting value, writer-turned-director Aaron Sorkin (he of ‘The West Wing’ and ‘The Social Network’ fame) is one of the best value bets for his great work behind the camera and is at +1400 in the betting markets for his second directorial effort, ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’. 2021’s Best Picture Any movie other than Chloe Zhao’s ‘Nomadland’ should be considered an underdog this year. Nomadland’s relevance has been highlighted by the global pandemic being a similar crisis to the movie’s Great Depression chaos. In the betting markets. ‘Nomadland’ (at Best Picture Odds of -130) already picked up best drama at the Golden Globes Awards, and importantly since the turn of the millennium, eight winners of that award have gone on to take the Oscar home. Best Outsider: The Trial of the Chicago 7 – +275 Best of luck and Good Oscars betting!
