Leading New Jersey online sportsbook, FanDuel, has become the first online operator in the nation to back the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) public “Have a Game Plan” responsible gaming campaign and has committed substantial financial resources to the organization’s effort. Additionally, a considerable part of FanDuel’s league assets, media interests, and team assets will be directed toward spreading the AGA’s message to bettors at risk and the sports wagering public in general. The two bodies are seeking to launch the campaign nationally by May 2021. What’s Involved in ‘Have a Game Plan’? Operating on a state-by-state basis and beginning here in New Jersey as the leading sports wagering state in the nation, the “Have a Game Plan” campaign, through the AGA and partners like FanDuel provide information to gaming customers regarding how and where to locate legally licensed sports betting options in each jurisdiction. It will also seek to highlight responsible sports betting practices and how to identify problem gambling behaviors as they occur. Among other things, the AGA’s guide informs consumers on the basics of responsible sports betting and on how to identify tell-tale signs of gambling addiction. FanDuel’s participation in the AGA project comes at a key moment according to AGA Chief Executive Officer and President, Bill Miller; “Responsibility to our customers has always been a pillar of AGA member operations. Extending this to meet the new realities of an expanded sports betting ecosystem is going to require full collaboration with everyone involved in it – gaming operators, media companies, and leagues and teams,” Miller announced. “We’re excited to have a partner like FanDuel to help extend this important initiative.” Miller, by stressing that one of the AGA’s core principles is responsibility to its customers, explains why the consumer protection association has decided to move with the times by adapting its approach to the contemporary sports betting environment. As he suggests, the widespread collaboration with the industry as a whole will be essential to the success of the initiative. Proper consumer education on good gaming practices has become more important now than it has been at any stage in the past due to the rapid expansion of the sports wagering industry. As the U.S. sports betting market continues to grow at unparalleled speeds, bettors need to be informed on how to bet responsibly and recognize the signs of addiction will also require to grow at a similar or even faster rate. Online sportsbook operators will be a crucial part of the process and seeing FanDuel become involved at this early stage of the process is a breath of fresh air. “As the mobile gaming industry leader in the US, we believe promoting responsible gaming behaviors is a core tenet of growing our business and the industry as a whole,” added FanDuel Group Chief Executive Officer Matt King. “We are not only going to commit substantial FanDuel resources to promote Have a Game Plan but we intend to build a consortium of partners throughout the sports and gaming business to scale this initiative and we encourage other operators to join us” King said. The AGA initially begun with the ‘Have a Game Plan’ in 2019 and their other program partners to date include the NHL, Golf’s PGA Tour, NASCAR, Monumental Sports and Entertainment and the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights.
