Former NJ Gov. Christie Stars in Sports Betting Radio Show

New Jersey was the state that led the fight against the 4 major professional sports leagues and the NCAA in the U.S. Supreme Court. Of course, the state eventually won that famous legal battle in 2018, as the Supreme Court overturned the 1992 PASPA decision and handed control of sports betting back to the states.

The man who led that fight was-then New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie. Sports Betting has long been a passion of the former Governor and he is returning to the radio waves at WFAN to participate in a ‘responsible gaming’ online casino and online sports betting show.

Christie to become a regular radio contributor

Former Governor Christie will be a regular guest on “Hello, My Name is Craig” hosted by the voice of WFAN, Craig Carton. Sponsored by The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, the show will be feature Christie, members of the 1-800-GAMBLER team, and rehabilitation center managers to help counter the effects of problem gaming. The show concentrates on promoting responsible online sports betting and casino play.

“The reason we named this show is ‘Hello, My Name is Craig’ is because that’s how I introduce myself every week at Gamblers Anonymous (GA) meetings,” Carton said at the opening of the show’s first episode on Saturday, January 9.

“This show is not a GA show” Carton continued, “it’s a show to discuss the signs and aspects of gambling that you may see in yourself, or in a loved one, to help you realize there’s a problem. Hopefully, this will get even just one person to pick up the phone.”

Christie Shares His Words of Wisdom

On the show’s first episode, former State Governor Christie recounted his experience with host Craig Carton in helping him realize he first had a gaming problem some years ago;
“You were reluctant, as I recall, to give me exact amounts, until I pushed you,” former Governor Christie explained. “It was clearly giving you something else for your radio show. I think one of the things people discount about you at your worst times is that you were much more focused on your career than your gambling – it gave you bits, and it gave you the chance to mask it under the guise of being a bit for the show.” Christie added.

Chris Christie went on to clarify why it was one of his priorities as NJ State Governor to ensure that a body with an online sportsbook or online casino license in New Jersey also sponsored and subsidized responsible gambling initiatives.

“We know that with everything you do in government, there are intended results and unintended consequences,” Christie outlined. “Those who are participating in that industry who benefit from the good things that happen also have to help contribute to those who suffer from the collateral consequences of that industry, and we have a responsibility to help people who can’t do it responsibly”, the former Garden State Governor explained.

Chris Christie’s insights will be a highlight of the weekly show, providing the kind of no-nonsense straight-talking the former Governor is known for. Giving us more of an idea what future episodes will be like, Host Craig Carton wrote in a recent media release;

“Each week, we will tackle different aspects of what for some is a fun recreation but for others is an addiction that forever alters and sometimes ends lives. The show will be a raw and revealing look into the fastest-growing vice in the country and I look forward to providing my first-hand perspective for both those dealing with the grip of their gambling compulsions as well as the loved ones in their lives.” Carton wrote.
