Surprise Results for New Jersey Bettors in the NFL Draft

Surprise results for New Jersey bettors in the NFL Draft

For a recent three-day span, betting on one of the major U.S. leagues sprung back to life in the state of New Jersey after the enforced hibernation. The NFL conducted its 85th annual player draft virtually from homes all across the country. However, results were mixed for the Garden State’s online players as a gaggle of underdogs draft picks were made by the Giants, Eagles and Jets – the three most-favored NFL teams for fans in New Jersey.

Draft surprises were non-stop for the Giants

New York Giants fans in New Jersey were totally split on whether their team would take select star Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons, Alabama tackle Jedrick Wills or Iowa tackle Tristan Wirfs with their overall number four pick in this year’s draft.

As it played out, the Giants took a tackle — but it was neither the Iowa nor Alabama star. Surprising bettors and even the sportsbooks, the Giants took Georgia tackle Andrew Thomas at Number 4, a player who was listed at the underdog odds of 10/1 to go to the Giants on a range of the state’s sportsbooks.

It was a huge shock and a great outcome for bookies as more than 80% of the Garden State betting handle was on Simmons, Willis (the outstanding favorite to go to Giants) and Wirfs.

In the end, Simmons went as the 8th overall pick to the Arizona Cardinals, and Wirfs, went in 13th spot to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – a pick ensuring Tom Brady’s safe passage to Bucs. Both players had been listed at the short odds of +225 and +300 respectively with 888Sport, to be among players taken in the top five picks.

Eagles fans and bettors also missed out on the favorites

One of the biggest surprises of the draft was the selection of former Alabama and Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts by the Philadelphia Eagles in Friday’s second round.

As the first quarterback taken on Day 2 of the 2020 NFL draft, Oklahoma’s Hurts choice by the Eagles was both a surprising and intriguing move.

Hurts was selected No. 53 overall pick and appears likely to serve as the immediate backup to his fellow former No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz, who despite being injury-prone has potential MVP-caliber talent. Yet Hurts also has the potential to start right away, and a lot may fall on the way that the Eagles want to play next season – ball-in-hand, or aerial.

Whichever way you look at it, bettors were clearly not expecting Hurts to be chosen by the Eagles.

The Eagles also sprung a surprise in the first round choosing Jalen Reagor of TCU, son of former NFL defensive tackle Montae Reagor, a Super Bowl XLI winner with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Jets round out the NJ betting surprises

True to their unpredictable form on the field, the New York Jets also had shock in store for New Jersey bettors.

The Jets had sports betting fans almost evenly split for the overall 11th pick in the first round, seeing a betting battle for favoritism between wide receiver Jerry Jeudy of Alabama, and fellow wide receiver, CeeDee Lamb of Oklahoma. Jeudy had been at +400, while Lamb was at +600 with both SugarHouse and FanDuel respectively.

As it turned out, it seems the Jets didn’t believe they need to fire up their offense with a wide receiver, instead looking to firm up their defense taking Mekhi Becton, a tackle, the third favorite who hovered in the odds between +700 and +750.

If the coming NFL season produces even half of these type of betting surprises, now might be the time to look at underdog Superbowl champs.
