Cubs vs Cardinals Week 8
Cubs vs Cardinals MLB betting predictions

The Cardinals RHP Miles Mikolas hasn’t pitched since 2019 but gets the start versus the Cub’s RHP Adbert Alzolay (2-3) in St. Louis Saturday evening. The Cardinals starting Mikolas leaves too many questions for me to bet on them in this one. I think Alzolay, who has a good 0.89 WHIP on the season will have a solid outing while the Cards starting Mikolas could mean a deep bullpen night for Cards and Manager MIke Shildt. I pick the Cubs to win.

Cubs vs Cardinals betting odds

If you’re looking for tips on how to bet on MLB in New Jersey, here is a good one – don’t base your bet on a pitcher who hasn’t pitched in 2 seasons in MLB. The Cardinals Miles Mikolas is exactly that as he hasn’t pitched since 2019 after surgery (flexor tendon throwing arm) kept him off the roster last season.

So let’s look at other facets of Saturday’s game to make our pick. Like the rest of the Cardinals pitching staff.

The Cards bullpen has been decent this season and has a 3.88 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP but have not yielded many runs, the Cardinal pen has given up the 3rd fewest hits among MLB bullpens at 102 on the season. Shildt is likely to pull Mikolas early (by the 3rd even) and so this Cardinals pen could play a big role Saturday. Look for righty relievers Giovony Gallegos and Genesis Cabrera to get some work, they have 8 and 7 holds respectively, the rest of the Cards pen has 8 holds.

At the bat the Cardinals 3B Nolan Arenado leads the team with a .304 average, 10 HR, 31 RBI, and 51 hits. LF Dylan Carlson leads the team with a .379 OBP.

The visiting Chicago Cubs come into St. Louis having won 5 of 10 and trailing the Cardinals by 3 in the standings. Former Cubs catcher and current 2nd year manager David Ross will send righty Adbert Alzolay to square off against St. Louis. Alzolay is 2-3 this year with a 4.62 ERA and a nice 0.80 WHIP. On the road Alzolay is 1-2 with a slightly better ERA of 4.15. Alzolay has pitched 37 innings in 7 games so expect Ross to go to his bullpen between the 5th and 6th innings. The Cubs bullpen has a 3.32 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. If there is a save opportunity for the Cubs expect to see veteran closer Craig Kimbrel who has 9 saves on the season and 357 on his career and sports a 1.02 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP this year.

As a team the Cubs bats have a .322 OBP which is 7th in MLB this season. 3B Kris Bryant leads the Cubbies with a .308 average, 44 hits and a .401 OBP. Javier Baez the Cubs athletic free swinging shortstop leads the team with 28 RBI and 10 HR.

Frankly, there are just too many variables and question marks in this one with the Cardinals starting Mikolas to pick St. Louis even though they are at home. Take Chicago to win on the road.

Mac hails from Kenosha, WI, and at age 11 was hooked into the universe of sports betting by correcting the local newspapers' weekly football pool. In the wild, Mac can be found playing catch with his kid, golfing, or watching sports like baseball, the PGA Tour, the NBA, MMA, or any other sport (most likely with a beer in hand). While Mac is officially a Green Bay Packers stockholder, he takes no responsibility for the Packer's recent playoff failures. A copywriter for 9 years, Mac is thrilled to provide his predictions and insights for usalegalbetting.com. Once asked if he could choose to have a beer with any athlete in history, living or dead he answered, "I'd definitely choose someone living."
