Memphis Grizzlies vs. San Antonio Spurs Betting Predictions

Grizzlies vs Spurs Play-In
Memphis vs. San Antonio, NBA Playoffs Betting Predictions, May 19

The San Antonio Spurs travel to take on the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference’s first NBA playoffs play-in game. San Antonio is trying to regroup after losing 10 of their last 12 games, while Memphis enters the postseason with victories in six of their last eight games. Being at home and being the team with better form should be enough for the Grizzlies to advance.

Grizzlies vs. Spurs Betting Odds

This is a true winner-takes-all matchup as the ninth-seeded Memphis Grizzlies host the 10th-seeded San Antonio Spurs in the NBA playoffs play-in round. The winner will travel to the West Coast for the final play-in round contest in the Western Conference to determine the No. 8 seed while the loser’s season ends. This is a contest that will test the difference between beating subpar competition and being competitive against good competition. The Spurs have lost 10 of their last 12 games, but 11 of those contests came against teams in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies have won six of their last eight games, but five of those six wins came against teams outside the playoff picture.

If there is one thing the Grizzlies excel at, it is finding ways to put up shots. Memphis took the second most shots of any team in the NBA, largely because it ranked fourth in total rebounds – including second in offensive rebounds at 11.2 per game – and led the league with 9.1 steals per game. The Grizzlies are well-balanced with five players averaging between 12 and 20 points per game, led by Ja Morant’s 19.1 points per contest. Morant is the key facilitator as well with 7.4 assists per game while Jonas Valančiūnas provides muscle inside with 12.5 rebounds per game, including four offensive boards per game. Together, the Grizzlies are nothing short of consistent, ranking in the middle of the pack in scoring offense and defense in the league this season.

The Spurs provide more of a boom or bust quality to this game because when things are going well for San Antonio, they go really well, and when things go poorly, it gets ugly quickly. The perfect example came in the final week of the season when the Spurs shot nearly 60 percent from the field and made 17 3-pointers in a win over Milwaukee then less than a week later, made just 4-of-26 from behind the arc while allowing 140 points in a loss to Phoenix. Those are definitely extremes for this team, but defense is a concern for the Spurs. San Antonio allowed just 111 points per game in the first 60 games, but that number has shot up to more than 121 points per game in the final dozen games of the season. If anything, that could cause the downfall of this team this season.

We’re going to keep it simple with our NBA betting predictions from the NBA betting sites in New Jersey. Memphis begins the day as 3.5-point favorites at the legal sports betting sites in New Jersey, but I think that might be a little too kind to San Antonio. Granted, the Grizzlies aren’t the type of team that is going to blow out the opposition, but the Spurs are allowing opponents to shoot nearly 50 percent from the floor in the last 12 games, and few teams can create the volume of shots as Memphis. The Spurs are vulnerable on the offensive glass and that is where the Grizzlies are going to cause the most problems. I’m betting on Memphis to win laying 7.5 points at +170 odds at the basketball betting sites in New Jersey.

My Prediction

Memphis -4 Points

There are two ways to approach these two teams and the way they closed the season. You could make the argument that the Spurs played a more difficult schedule and were competitive in those games, and therefore are battled-tested for the postseason. I would argue, however, that wins build confidence and losses – especially close ones – don’t. The Grizzlies might not have had a tough slate to end the season, but they took care of who was put in front of them and have the confidence to win this game.
