New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs Betting Predictions

Knicks vs Spurs NBA Week 21
New York vs. San Antonio, NBA Betting Predictions, May 13

The New York Knicks return home trying to build some positive momentum as they host the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday. The Spurs have lost seven of their last nine games after falling in Brooklyn on Wednesday as they try to hold onto the final spot in the play-in tournament. New York has won eight of its last nine games at Madison Square Garden, and should run that streak to nine out of 10 against the weary Spurs.

Knicks vs. Spurs Betting Odds

Two teams in need of victories square off Thursday night at Madison Square Garden where the New York Knicks will host the San Antonio Spurs. The hosts are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, but just a half-game separates the Knicks in sixth place from the Hawks in fourth after New York lost three of its last four games on a six-game road trip. Meanwhile, the Spurs have lost seven of their last nine games and are clinging to the final spot in the play-in round amidst the tailspin. San Antonio played Wednesday night in Brooklyn while New York flew home from the West Coast on Tuesday night.

The resurgence of the Knicks has been powered first and foremost by Julius Randle, who is averaging a career-best 24 points, 10.3 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game this season. Randle has eclipsed 30 points in nine of his last 15 games and grabbed at least 10 rebounds in seven contests. Randle’s increased role in New York has led to his worst shooting percentage in five years, but he is shooting 41.5 percent from 3-point range, seven percentage points better than his previous career high while taking twice as many shots from long range. Randle is complemented well by R.J. Barrett, who has come into his own in his second year by averaging 17.5 points per game, as well as Derrick Rose, who has come back from injury issues early in the season to be a critical distributor and scorer for the Knicks.

On San Antonio’s side of the court, the Spurs are led by DeMar DeRozan’s 21.5 points per game. They need all the offense they can get because the Spurs are not nearly as strong defensively as previous Gregg Popovich teams. During this recent nine-game stretch, the Spurs have scored 114.6 points per game, but they have allowed 121 per contest. Four of their last five opponents have scored more than 120 points and three of those five foes made more than 50 percent of their shot attempts. Even the offensive statistics are a bit skewed by a pair of offensive outbursts during this recent run. The Spurs have scored 111 points or fewer in five of those nine games and they have shot just 30.8 percent from behind the arc if you exclude their win over Milwaukee when San Antonio made 17 of 29 shots from 3-point range.

It should come as no surprise then, that the NBA betting sites in New Jersey have installed the Knicks as five-point favorites for Thursday’s contest. New York is clearly the better team and they might even have the better players, which is not something Knicks fans have experience seeing. I personally think the basketball betting sites in New Jersey are a bit kind to the Spurs on the spread, and expect the Knicks to win this game rather comfortably by double digits. The easy pick for me then would be to bet on New York to win by at least 11 points at +210 odds. However, I’m going to get spicier by limiting that range even further to just 11-15 points at +600 odds at the legal sports betting sites in New Jersey. The Spurs have some offensive firepower to keep within striking distance for most of the game, but the fatigue from back-to-back games and the poor defensive performances open the door for an easy Knicks win.

My Prediction

New York -5 Points

There is no doubt that San Antonio can score, but the Spurs’ defense has been questionable recently. They have lost seven of their last nine games, and though the Knicks have lost three of four, New York is a different team on its home court. The Knicks have won eight of their last nine at home and they should be able to regroup from a tough road trip to outlast the Spurs.
