Golden State Warriors vs. Memphis Grizzlies Betting Predictions

NBA Playoffs 2020
Golden State vs. Memphis, NBA Playoffs Betting Predictions, May 21

Just five days ago, the Golden State Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies by 12 points at home in the regular-season finale to clinch the tentative No. 8 seed. Now the two teams meet Friday in the Bay Area to definitely decide the eighth seed in the final Western Conference NBA playoffs play-in game. Memphis couldn’t stop Steph Curry on Sunday when these teams met, and the Grizzlies won’t do it Friday either as Curry leads the Warriors into the postseason officially.

Warriors vs. Grizzlies Betting Odds

Last Sunday, the Golden State Warriors hosted the Memphis Grizzlies in the regular-season finale with the winner earning a spot opposite the Lakers in an NBA playoffs play-in game. The Warriors beat the Grizzlies by 12 points that day then took the defending champions down to the last shot before coming up short. Memphis dominated the first quarter against San Antonio in its play-in game, but the Grizzlies required a massive fourth-quarter effort to stave off the Spurs’ rally. Now these two teams meet Friday back in Oakland with the official eighth seed in the Western Conference on the line.

It is easy to credit Stephen Curry and his 37 points as the reason why the Golden State Warriors were competitive with the Lakers on Wednesday. However, those who watched the game saw an incredible team effort at both ends of the floor around Curry, especially on defense. Golden State swarmed the Lakers and made the game difficult for Los Angeles’ best players for most of the night. Yes, Curry had his fair share of ridiculous shots and he kept his scoring average at 37 points since April. But it was players like Kent Bazemore, who was a rock defensively, and Kevon Looney, who grabbed 13 rebounds including five offensive boards, that really made the Warriors dangerous. Now they don’t have to deal with the type of talent that the Lakers have, which should help the Warriors maintain that defensive effort and intensity for 48 minutes.

The Grizzlies showed plenty of resiliency in their win over the Spurs, responding countless times over the final three quarters when San Antonio made its run at Memphis. But the fact the Spurs were able to keep that game competitive shows a lot about where Memphis is right now. San Antonio played a much better team game than Memphis, and that seemed to give the Grizzlies some trouble in the final three quarters. Memphis relied too heavily on Dillon Brooks, Ja Morant and Jonas Valančiūnas to make plays, and that won’t work against the Warriors. Curry missed the first two games the Warriors played against the Grizzlies this season then dropped 46 points on them in the season finale on Sunday. Unless the Grizzlies magically found a way to slow down Curry, they will need more of a team effort to overcome these Warriors.

At the end of the day, one team has the best shooter in NBA history and the other doesn’t. Curry has just been so dominant over the past month that it feels wrong betting against him on the legal sports betting sites in New Jersey. Unfortunately, it also means that there isn’t value in focusing on Curry in the betting process. One area where I think the basketball betting sites in New Jersey have gone horribly wrong is making Golden State just 3.5-point favorites over Memphis. The Grizzlies did not look very good against the Spurs while the Warriors nearly took down the defending champions on the road. Golden State should not only win this game, but do so convincingly, so I’m betting on the Warriors to win by at least 11 points at +260 odds, coupling that with betting Golden State laying 9.5 points at +230 odds.

On an individual level, I’m a big fan of Draymond Green in this game, so I’ll combo bet the forward at the NBA betting sites in New Jersey. I’m wagering on Green to produce a double-double at +200 odds and betting on him to have a triple-double at +680 odds. Green has had at least eight assists in his last nine games and only once in that stretch did he not have double figures in either rebounds or points. I only bet on Green to have a triple-double because when these teams met Sunday, Green was an assist and rebound shy of a triple-double, so it’s within the realm that he will be in contention to actually succeed Friday night.

My Prediction

Golden State -3.5 Points

I really should only need to type Steph Curry because he’s the biggest reason why Golden State is going to win. I could mention the fact these two teams played last Sunday or that the Warriors won convincingly or the fact Golden State probably should have beaten the Lakers on Wednesday. Or even that San Antonio gave Memphis all it could handle Wednesday in the other play-in game. But Curry is playing at another level right now and the Grizzlies just don’t have the answers to slow him down.
