Alabama vs. Maryland Betting Predictions

NCAAB March Madness Alabama vs Maryland
Alabama vs. Maryland Betting Predictions NCAA Basketball

No. 10 seed Maryland (17-13) is coming off an upset victory over UConn in the first round. They’ll take on No. 2 seed Alabama (25-6) for a chance to go to the Sweet 16. Alabama is one of the strongest rebounding and defensive teams in the tournament, and I don’t think Maryland has enough offense to get past them.

Alabama vs. Maryland Betting Odds

Maryland lost three of their final five games before upsetting No. 7 seed UConn 63-54 in Round One Saturday to advance. Guard Eric Ayala scored 23 points and the Terrapins shot 50 percent from 3 in the win.

Ayala leads the Terrapins in scoring (15.2 PPG). Forward Donta Scott (43.5% from 3), is a good outside shooter while averaging a team leading 6.1 rebounds per game. Scott is a strong presence inside and leads the team with 25 blocks. Guard Darryl Morsell was defensive player of the year in the Big-Ten and leads the team in assists (2.8 APG). Guard Andrew Wiggins is also a scoring threat for the Terrapins, averaging 14 points per game this season while dishing out 5.8 rebounds per game.

Making their 29th trip to the NCAAs, Maryland has struggled at times to put up points this season, averaging 68.6 per game. They’ve held opponents to 64.6 however, and have the defense to hang with a tough Alabama offense. The Terrapins held UConn to 7-23 shooting (30.4%) from 3 on Saturday, and will need to put that kind of pressure on the Crimson Tide to win Monday. Stellar defender Daryl Morsell will make life difficult for whoever he ends up covering.

Alabama took down No. 15 seed Iona 68-55 Saturday, spoiling Gaels’ coach Rick Pitino’s return to the tournament. Forward Herb Jones scored 20 points as Alabama out rebounded Iona 42-26 and held them to 39 percent shooting and 21.3 percent from 3. The Crimson Tide have won 10 of their last 11 games after Saturday’s victory.

Alabama has a variety of offensive weapons that make them a threat against even the best teams in the tournament. Guard Jayden Shackleford leads the team in scoring (14.1 PPG), while Herb Jones leads the Crimson Tide in rebounds (6.5 RPG) and assists (3.4 APG) on 11.5 points per game. Containing those two will only be a small part of the battle for Maryland, They’ll have to contend with Jahvon Quinerly, who is shooting 44.9 percent from 3, and John Petty Jr. (37.0% from 3 and 12.2 PPG). The Tide are one of the best rebounding teams in the country, averaging 40.5 rebounds per game to Maryland’s 33.

The legal sports betting sites in New Jersey have Alabama as 5.5-point favorites. If you’re going with Alabama it’s a little concerning that they committed 14 turnovers against Iona while shooting 21.7 percent from 3. That said, I don’t think they’ll have that kind of performance two games in a row.

It will be a battle, and Alabama might not hit their average point total this season ( 79.2), but they’re too strong offensively to wear down against Maryland and will dominate the Terrapins on the glass. I’d be comfortable taking them to cover in this game.

The total is at 138.5 and I think considering how strong both teams are defensively, taking the under at -105 odds (Sugar House) is a good bet.

There are also plenty of player-specific bets available, like Herb Jones Over 6.5 rebounds at -103 Odds (888Sport and FanDuel). Jones has over six rebounds in five of his last seven games, including 14 in ‘Bama’s win over LSU in the SEC Tournament final on 3/14.

My Prediction
