Canadiens vs. Oilers: Free Picks, Odds & Predictions

Canadiens vs Oilers NHL
Montreal vs. Edmonton, Bell Center

The Edmonton Oilers take a three-game winning streak into this East Coast swing with three straight games in Montreal starting Monday night. Edmonton has surged into the lead in the North Division while their hosts, the Montreal Canadiens, are hanging on to the final playoff spot at the moment. The Canadiens are in need of some positive momentum having not won consecutive games since February 1 and 2.

Free Picks

This is a value pick at +240 odds from the NHL betting sites in New Jersey because Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would be having a strong season by any other metrics. Nugent-Hopkins has scored 11 goals and has 26 points this season, good enough for fourth best total on the team. The safer bet might be the +138 odds on Leon Draisaitl or Connor McDavid to score, but I like to spice it up a bit with Nugent-Hopkins, who is a strong goal scorer outshined by his two unworldly teammates.

RYAN NUGENT-HOPKINS SCORES GOAL

The Canadiens have allowed at least three goals in four of their last five games, and the Oilers have hit the four-goal mark four times in their last seven games. With all of the offensive talent on the roster for Edmonton, I expect it will be able to take advantage of some shaky defense from Montreal in this game. The Canadiens have played well against the Oilers in their first three meetings this season, but both of these teams look much different than they did a month ago when they last met. Edmonton has found its groove and I expect it to bring the juice early on the road in the first of three straight games in Montreal. The other reason I like this bet in the modest +148 odds from the hockey betting sites in New Jersey, which is a good price for this bet.

EDMONTON OILERS OVER 3.5 GOALS

I was absolutely shocked to see the +163 odds from the legal sports betting sites in New Jersey on the Oilers to win this game in regulation. Part of that might have to do with Montreal going to overtime in three straight games, but the Canadiens were also favored in this game, which was flabbergasting. Everything about this game points to an Edmonton victory despite the Oilers being the visitors. Montreal won its last game and hasn’t won consecutive games in six weeks while Edmonton is riding a three-game winning streak into Montreal and has won seven of its last nine games. It’s hard to see a situation where the Oilers don’t get the job done in 60 minutes Monday night.

Statistics

Head to Head

This is the fourth matchup of the year between Montreal and Edmonton as the road team has won each of the three earlier meetings this season.

Stats

  • Edmonton ranks second in the NHL in scoring offense at 3.41 goals per game this season. The Oilers are doing so with the fifth-ranked power play, which is converting at 27 percent.
  • Montreal has lost just three times in regulation since firing Claude Julien last month, but the Canadiens are just 5-3-5 under Dominique Ducharme’s leadership.
  • It’s not that Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are teammates and the top-two points scorers in the NHL, it’s just how wide the margin is. McDavid leads the league with 60 points, 10 more than Draisaitl, who is eight points up on third place. McDavid also leads the league in both goals and assists with 21 goals and 39 assists this year.
  • Jeff Petry leads all defensemen with 11 goals this season and he is tied for the team lead with 27 points this season. Tyler Toffoli leads the Canadiens with 18 goals, which is tied with Leon Draisaitl for third-most in the league this season.

Our Prediction for Montreal vs. Edmonton

Edmonton Oilers to win

I am honestly shocked that Montreal is considered the favorite in this game considering the recent trends for these two teams. Edmonton has won seven of its last nine games, including three straight, while Montreal has not won consecutive games since the beginning of February. The Canadians might be the home team, but the coaching change has done little to inspire a jolt in the team as they cling desperately to the fourth and final playoff spot in the division at the moment. Edmonton is playing as well as it has all season long and that will continue Monday night despite being on the road.
