Golden Knights vs Blues: Free Picks, Odds & Predictions

NHL Vegas Golden Knights vs St. Louis Blues
Vegas vs. St. Louis, T-Mobile Arena

The Vegas Golden Knights scored twice in the third period to force overtime but it was the St. Louis Blues who prevailed in a shootout to claim the second point Tuesday. Now The two teams face off for a second straight game Thursday as the Blues stay in Las Vegas to face the Golden Knights. It’s a battle between two strong teams with aspirations for deep playoff runs, but the hosts are the slight favorites in this one.

Free Picks

Yes, it is odd to pick a defenseman in a bet about who will score a goal, but Shea Theodore is always around the action from his spot on the blue line. He scored twice in a game earlier this season and he has three goals already this year. I’m a fan of the +370 odds from the hockey betting sites in New Jersey, and Vegas is always good about getting their defensemen in on the attack. Theodore had an assist in Tuesday’s game and he’s poised to let one fly from the blue line that will handcuff the Blues goalie.

SHEA THEODORE SCORES GOAL

Four of St. Louis’ seven games this season have featured at least eight goals and four of Vegas’ seven contests have featured at least seven. The two teams combined for eight goals on Tuesday and these are two of the higher scoring teams in the league. St. Louis is also having defending problems, ranking 27th in the NHL in goals against, so Vegas will have plenty of chances to score. The Golden Knights’ goaltending is still a shaky situation, so that should give the Blues a chance to capitalize like teams did in the playoffs against Vegas last season. At +280 odds from the legal betting sites in New Jersey, this seems like a good risk to take on this game.

OVER 7.5 TOTAL GOALS

Here’s a fun little nugget: five of the six games between St. Louis and Vegas at T-Mobile Arena have required overtime. That includes Tuesday’s game that was the first of the bunch to actually advance to a shootout. These two teams are both among the best in the league so it makes sense that every game between these two would be hotly contested. The generous +300 odds from the NHL betting sites in New Jersey should give you a reason to take a chance on the trend to continue Thursday.

Statistics

Head to Head

This is the second of eight meetings during this pandemic-shortened season between Vegas and St. Louis after the Blues won Tuesday night in a shootout.

Stats

  • The home team won all three games between the two teams last season with Vegas winning twice in overtime at home. In the Golden Knights’ history, St. Louis has won six of the 10 games between the two teams.
  • Somehow in six meetings at T-Mobile Arena, the Blues have walked away with points on every occasion with two wins and four overtime losses in Las Vegas.
  • Vegas has players tied for the league lead in both goals and assists. Max Pacioretty is tied for the NHL lead with six goals and Mark Stone is tied for the lead with nine assists. Stone also is second in the NHL with 11 points through seven games.
  • Both of these teams are struggling on the power play early in the season and are among the bottom six in the league. Vegas ranks 26th at 11.5 percent success rate and St. Louis is 27th at 8.7 percent.

Our Prediction for Vegas vs. St. Louis

Vegas Golden Knights to win

Both of these teams look like potential contenders to win the Stanley Cup this season, and it will be a very tight game. The Golden Knights are the home team and that might give them an edge in this matchup of two heavyweights. The other factor going in Vegas’ favor is that the Blues have yet to sweep a two-game series so far this season, and that is a trend I suspect will continue Thursday.
