Golden Knights vs Ducks: Free Picks, Odds & Predictions

NHL Vegas Golden Knigts vs Aneheim Ducks
Vegas vs Anaheim, T-Mobile Arena

The Vegas Golden Knights were just a few missed plays away from competing for the Stanley Cup for the second time in three years last season. The four one-goal losses to Dallas have only fueled Vegas as it seeks to continue its stunning run of success in its fourth season of existence. The Anaheim Ducks are stuck in a rebuild, but there is plenty of young talent that will turn heads in the years to come.

Free Picks

Vegas had twice as many 15-goal scorers last season as Anaheim, so that’s already an early advantage to the Golden Knights. The Ducks struggled to score last season and most of their forwards this season are young and still learning how to play at the NHL level. Vegas has no such issues and just has to figure out how to solve John Gibson, who has been one of the better goalies in the league over the past few seasons. The Golden Knights will win comfortably and I don’t expect Anaheim to add much to the goal total in this game.

UNDER 5.5 GOALS

This is one of those predictions that’s designed to hedge the bets at the NHL betting sites in New Jersey. The Ducks have given up a lot of shots over the last three seasons, ranking in the top-seven in most shots allowed in all three of those seasons. Vegas is very good at dominating possession and turning that into a lot of shots and a lot of scoring opportunities. John Gibson hasn’t played an NHL game in 10 months and it will be interesting to see how sharp he will be between the pipes for the Ducks. Vegas scored five goals in three of their four games with Anaheim last season and they will pick up where they left off against the Ducks.

VEGAS SCORES OVER 4 GOALS

This particular part of my NHL predictions is designed to take a risk, but if there is one game that I expect might get out of hand on opening night, it is this one. This is just a giant mismatch on paper between a team that made it to the Western Conference finals last season and one that has missed the playoffs the last two seasons. Anaheim is clearly not ready to compete this season, but has the young talent to be a strong team in the future. The Golden Knights are trying to win now, and that difference will be apparent Thursday night in Las Vegas.

Statistics

Head to Head

This will be the first meeting of eight meetings this season between the West Division rivals due to the revamped scheduling created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stats

  • The Golden Knights won three of four meetings with the Ducks last season to move their all-time record to 10-2-0 against Anaheim in Vegas’ three years of existence.
  • This will be the third straight year that Vegas will start the season at home, having split its last two openers. Anaheim has alternated opening the season on the road and at home, but have won three consecutive season openers.
  • Seven of Vegas’ 10 wins over Anaheim have come by multiple goals and it has scored at least three goals in 11 of the 12 contests with the Ducks. Anaheim has scored three goals just three times against the Golden Knights, and two of those games were last season.
  • All four games last season featured at least seven combined goals after just one of the first eight between the teams had six goals or more.

Our Prediction for Vegas vs Anaheim

Vegas Golden Knights to win

It’s easy to judge the performance of teams last season by whether or not they were able to resume their seasons in the bubble. Vegas advanced all the way to the conference finals while Anaheim hasn’t played a competitive game in more than 10 months. The Golden Knights will start the season quicker as they feel like they are primed to be a contender in the Western Conference for years to come based on their roster.
