Hurricanes vs. Blue Jackets: Free Picks, Odds & Predictions

Hurricanes vs Blue Jackets NHL
Carolina vs. Columbus, PNC Arena

If the last four Columbus Blue Jackets games are any indication, we will see overtime Saturday night when Columbus visits the Carolina Hurricanes. All of the Blue Jackets’ four games have required more than 60 minutes to decide, including Thursday’s 3-2 win over Carolina. The Hurricanes have now lost two straight games after winning eight in a row as they play the Blue Jackets in the second of four straight games between these two over the next week.

It’s been a shockingly-long dry spell for Andrei Svechnikov since he scored six goals in his first eight games this season. He’s scored just twice in the next 21 contests, but it’s never a bad idea to bet on the sharpshooter to hit the back of the net for the Hurricanes. The extended goalless streak has helped up his odds to +210 at the hockey betting sites in New Jersey, which is great value for a player of his skill. He scored 20 goals in each of his first two seasons in the NHL, and his streak to start the season proves he can score consistently at the highest level. I just have a feeling that drought is going to break soon, and I’ll be ready to capitalize on it when it happens Saturday.

ANDREI SVECHNIKOV SCORES GOAL

This game is tricky to figure out scoring-wise because the Blue Jackets have been inconsistent at best defensively. When Columbus defends well, they do so really well, and often at the detriment of its own offense, and the reverse is true as well. Carolina allows the eighth-fewest goals in the league and Columbus scores the eight-fewest goals, so that is already a good sign. But I’m taking the risk on the +220 odds from the legal sports betting sites in New Jersey because this seems like a letdown game for the Blue Jackets. Carolina is angry after losing two straight games and the Blue Jackets have been inconsistent with scoring. The Hurricanes defense is going to step up and shut down the Blue Jackets to help lift Carolina back to its winning ways.

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS UNDER 1.5 GOALS

There is no value in betting on the Hurricanes to win this game Saturday night without going against the trends in this series. You can earn a serious payout by betting on the Hurricanes to win by multiple goals, but three of the four games between these two teams this year have been one-goal affairs. I expect a similar type game Saturday, which means it’ll likely be a low-scoring contest. I do expect the Hurricanes to come out hungry, though, and grab the first goal on home ice, so I’ll take the +105 odds from the NHL betting sites in New Jersey on this wager.

Statistics

Head to Head

This is the fifth contest of the season between Carolina and Columbus, and the second of four straight meetings between the teams. The Hurricanes and Blue Jackets have alternated wins and losses in the first four games of the year.

Stats

  • The Hurricanes have the best power play in the league, converting at a 31.9 percent clip and being tied for the league-lead with 30 power-play goals. Columbus has the fourth-worst penalty kill in the NHL by killing off just 72.6 percent of all penalties, but the Blue Jackets have also allowed the fourth-fewest power-play attempts in the league this season.
  • These two teams are some of the best in the NHL this season at scoring while a man down. Columbus is tied for second with five shorthanded goals while Carolina leads a group in fourth place with three shorthanded tallies.
  • Patrik Laine scored three points in his one game with the Winnipeg Jets this season, but he has just seven goals and five assists in 21 games with Columbus. Laine has scored just one goal and had one assist in his last 11 games with the Blue Jackets, both of which came last week against Florida.
  • Carolina has seven players with at least 20 points, led by Sebastian Aho’s 28 this season. Aho is tied with Vincent Trocheck and Nino Niederreiter for the team lead with 13 goals and ranks third on the team with 15 assists.

Our Prediction for Carolina vs. Columbus

Carolina Hurricanes to win

The Carolina Hurricanes won eight straight games before this recent two-game skid, but they should be able to get back on the right track Saturday night. The Columbus Blue Jackets may have won Thursday night’s contest, but that was just their fourth win in the last 12 games as they have tumbled down the standings. Carolina is good enough to keep pace with Tampa Bay in the Central Division, and the Hurricanes are aware they need to take advantage of as many points as possible against the bottom five teams in the division. The Hurricanes should be able to snap the skid Saturday at home against the whimpering Blue Jackets.
