Kings vs. Golden Knights: Free Picks, Odds & Predictions

Kings vs Golden Knights NHL
Los Angeles vs. Vegas, Staples Center

Since losing a tight game to Colorado at Lake Placid on Feb. 20, the Vegas Golden Knights have arguably been the best team in the NHL. They have won 11 of their 13 games since that defeat, including five in a row heading into Sunday’s game in Los Angeles against the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings had a six-game winning streak toward the end of February, but Los Angeles has just three wins in 11 games since that long streak was snapped.

Free Picks

It’s been a dry spell recently for Alex Tuch, who has scored just once in the last six games. That’s likely a reason why the NHL betting sites in New Jersey are offering +215 on him to score Sunday. But there is a reason why he has scored 13 goals this season, so the talent is there for him to break the slump. It wasn’t that long ago that Tuch had a stretch where he scored a goal in six of seven games, and I think the Kings provide the perfect foil for him to score again. Tuch did have two assists in Vegas’ second game of the season against the Kings, so he should get his chances

ALEX TUCH SCORES GOAL

Vegas has scored at least four goals in four of its last five games, and it has reached that mark eight times during this recent 13-game run. The Kings have received some quality goaltending before, but it has come in random spurts and Los Angeles is just too inconsistent not to take advantage of the odds from the hockey betting sites in New Jersey. It would have been easy to take the reasonable odds at over 3.5 goals, but I liked the flexibility of the +210 odds on more than four goals because at the very least, the Golden Knights should push. I expect the Golden Knights to flex their muscles and score a lot Sunday, but not enough to take a huge risk.

VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS OVER 4 GOALS

Seven of Vegas’ last 11 victories by one goal, but the Golden Knights had been playing much better competition than the Kings. The Golden Knights have won by multiple goals in two of the three matchups with the Kings this year. Los Angeles’ offense has struggled to be consistent this year, and now it faces the best scoring defense in the NHL this season. Meanwhile the Golden Knights have been consistently scoring a lot over the last week and the Kings’ defense has been shaky. Vegas’ strong defense and explosive offense will carry the day, so I’ll take the +150 odds from the legal sports betting sites in New Jersey on a multi-goal Vegas victory.

Statistics

Head to Head

This is the fourth matchup of the year between Los Angeles and Vegas as the Kings search for their first win over the Golden Knights this season.

Stats

  • Vegas leads the league with a .768 points percentage thanks to a league-leading 21 wins and a league-low six losses in regulation. The Golden Knights also allow a league-low 2.21 goals per game.
  • Power play goals will be hard to come by with these teams ranking fifth and sixth in the NHL in penalty killing this year. Vegas is killing 84.9 percent of its penalties this season while Los Angeles is slightly behind at 84.3 percent success rate. A main reason for the Kings’ success is averaging just 6.7 penalty minutes per game, second fewest in the NHL this season.
  • Max Pacioretty is tied for fifth in the NHL with 16 goals this season and he’s one of just 18 players around the league with 30 points this season. However, he trails Mark Stone’s team-leading 35 points, 25 of which are assists to also lead the team.
  • Anze Kopitar ranks fifth in the NHL with 27 assists this season, combining with his eight goals for 35 points, seventh-most in the league. Dustin Brown leads the Kings with 13 goals this season, but ranks third on the team with just 19 points this year.

Our Prediction for Los Angeles vs. Vegas

Vegas Golden Knights to win

Vegas is the clear class of the West Division this year with five wins in a row and 11 wins in its last 13 games. The Kings have struggled of late with just three wins in their last 11 games and hosting the Golden Knights does not bode well to ending that cold streak. Despite finding ways to win three times in four games against Vegas last year, Los Angeles has been outgunned by the Golden Knights at every turn this season. Vegas is playing too well to think they will slip up against the Kings on Sunday.
