Oilers vs. Maple Leafs: Free Picks, Odds & Predictions

NHL Edmonton Oilers vs Toronto Maple Leafs
Edmonton vs. Toronto, Rogers Place

It’s always fun when the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs face off against each other because it’s a chance to see some of the best offensive players in the league on the same rink. The Maple Leafs won the first game of this three-game series in Edmonton on Saturday night with a shutout, and increased their lead in the North Division to six points. The Oilers are trying to get back to their winning ways after winning 11 of their previous 13 games prior to the loss Saturday.

Free Picks

Sometimes you just have a hunch about someone, and Kailer Yamamoto is just that guy for me in this game. Going with the big guns is not very profitable, and the value wasn’t there to bet against those elite scorers either. So I landed on Yamamoto, who has scored just one goal in his last 12 games. However, the Maple Leafs are going to put so much attention on Edmonton’s biggest weapons that a player like Yamamoto is going to have his chances against Toronto’s bottom pair. The +245 odds are about as long as you’ll get on a realistic potential goal scorer from the hockey betting sites in New Jersey, so I’ll throw my hat into the ring with this pick.

KAILER YAMAMOTO SCORES GOAL

As much as offense is the strength of these two teams, these games haven’t been very high scoring between the two teams this season. The squads have combined for six or more goals in three of their five games this season, and one of those games included a last-second empty-net tally to hit six goals. For some reason when Toronto and Edmonton have faced off this season, we haven’t seen the offensive fireworks we may have expected. So instead of betting on that happening Monday, I’ll take the same route with +150 odds from the NHL betting sites in New Jersey.

UNDER 5.5 TOTAL GOALS

These two teams are basically co-favorites based on the odds at the legal sports betting sites in New Jersey, and though the value is there to bet on Toronto to win by multiple goals, these games have been very tight this season. I do expect Toronto to win in regulation, but I want to add some value in case the Maple Leafs tack on one with an empty-netter. At +210 odds, if Toronto wins by multiple goals, I still cash in on most of the value for a multi-goal Toronto victory, but I am also able to hedge my bet should it be a one-goal victory. The only caveat is the Maple Leafs must win in regulation, but Toronto has played just four overtime games this season in 22 contests thus far.

Statistics

Head to Head

This is already the sixth meeting of the season and the second of three straight games between Edmonton and Toronto in the competitive North Division.

Stats

  • Toronto has won three of the previous five contests this season against Edmonton and one of its two losses to the Oilers came in overtime. The winning team has scored exactly four goals in four of the five games, with Edmonton’s 3-1 victory in the first game of the season between the pair being the exception.
  • These are two of the five highest-scoring games in the league as Toronto ranks second at 3.55 goals per game and Edmonton is fifth at 3.43 goals per game.
  • Toronto’s defensemen are very active in the offense with Jake Muzzin (12 assists) and Morgan Reiley (14 assists) among the team leaders in helpers this season.
  • The game features four of the top-five points producers and the top-three leaders in assists. Leon Draisaitl, Mitch Marner and Connor McDavid are members of both lists while Auston Matthews, who leads the league in goals, is tied for fourth in points.

Our Prediction for Edmonton vs. Toronto

Toronto Maple Leafs to win

This is a challenge because Edmonton had won 11 of 13 games prior to being blanked Saturday by Toronto, but the Maple Leafs are still the clear class of the North Division. The Oilers’ goaltending situation is still a problem and some of those wins required third-period comebacks. The Maple Leafs have a lot of faults, but they have better scoring depth and a better defense than the Oilers.
