Sharks vs. Avalanche: Free Picks, Odds & Predictions

San Jose vs Colorado - NHL
San Jose vs. Colorado, SAP Center

Colorado picked up two much-needed wins in Arizona over the weekend to solidify their footing as they head into an easier portion of its schedule. The Avalanche continue their road trip in San Jose against the struggling Sharks, who are coming off two difficult losses last week. San Jose is at the bottom of the West Division while Colorado is still trying to fight its way to the top, and dropping points against the Sharks will be tough to overcome later in the season for the Avalanche.

Free Picks

I’m going to call this wager the UMass Special because we’re focusing in on a trio of college teammates in this game. For practical purposes, Cale Makar is the choice to score with +280 odds from the legal sports betting sites in New Jersey. However, Makar has been known more for his wizardry with the puck on his stick and his exquisite passing moreso than his goal scoring. San Jose has a pair of former Minutemen as well with rookie forward, John Leonard, a natural goal scorer listed at +420 odds, and defenseman Mario Ferraro, who isn’t much of a scorer but a potential longshot at +650 odds. It’s always special when these three players share the ice, so I’m guessing one of these three is going to light the lamp Monday night.

CALE MAKAR SCORES GOAL

I wanted to make this about how many goals the Avalanche will score, but the hockey betting sites in New Jersey stopped giving odds at over 4.5 goals for +200 odds. Instead, I went the other way to talk about the Sharks and the struggles I expect they will have to score. San Jose is scoring on less than nine percent of its shots this season, which is roughly Colorado’s save percentage this season as a team. The Sharks have only scored one goal or fewer in four games this season, but the Avalanche’s 3-0 win over the Sharks in January is San Jose’s only shutout loss of the season. In 11 games against the four teams occupying the playoff spots in the West Division, San Jose has scored two goals or fewer six times, so it also hasn’t fared well against the better teams in the division. The +260 odds on San Jose to struggle scoring goals is better value than Colorado having a scoring spree.

SAN JOSE SHARKS UNDER 1.5 GOALS

The Avalanche are clearly the better team in this game, and that will be evident on the scoreboard. Colorado won both matchups on home ice against San Jose by at least three goals, and the Sharks are coming off games in which they allowed six and seven goals respectively at home. The +240 odds are so much better at the NHL betting sites in New Jersey than the typical spread of Colorado laying 1.5 goals that I felt it was worth the risk of another Avalanche domination. When Colorado gets the offense going, it can put up goals in a hurry, and that is something the Sharks should fear with their team save percentage of .880, second-worst in the league.

Statistics

Head to Head

This is the third contest of the season between Colorado and San Jose after the Avalanche took both meetings in January in Denver.

Stats

  • Colorado won the first matchup of the season with San Jose 7-3 then followed up that victory with a 3-0 shutout two nights later on home ice.
  • Mikko Rantanen leads the Avalanche with eight goals this season and he is scoring on 13.6 percent of his shots on goal. Nathan MacKinnon leads Colorado with 20 points, but is scoring on just 7.1 percent of his shots on goal.
  • San Jose is allowing the second-most goals per game in the league at 3.89 per contest after allowing 13 combined goals in its last two games. Colorado ranks as the third-best team with just 2.33 goals allowed per game.
  • Logan Couture is tied for fifth in the league with 11 goals this seasons and has goals in four of his last five games.

Our Prediction for San Jose vs. Colorado

Colorado Avalanche to win

The Avalanche were so dominant when these two teams last met that it’s hard to see a change in location making a difference. Colorado picked up two important wins in Arizona to change the momentum of its season and San Jose has now lost five of seven after Saturday’s chaotic game against St. Louis. The Sharks are at the bottom of the West Division for a reason in this rebuild and Colorado will springboard its way to a third straight win as it climbs up the standings.
