Why The Wolfpack Will Win

Nevada will face a significant challenge this weekend as they host the UNLV Rebels on Saturday night. Their rivals to the south have won ten of their previous 11 games, but the one loss came at home against the Wolfpack. It was a close loss, but now the Rebels will need to try to avenge it in front of a hostile Nevada crowd on Saturday.

The Wolfpack have been almost as hot as the Rebels of late, winning ten of their previous 12 games. Both losses were to New Mexico, but the run includes wins against Colorado State, Utah State, and San Diego State when each was ranked in the AP Top 25. It also includes a road victory against the red-hot rebels.

One big reason we like the Wolfpack to win this weekend is their success against UNLV last month. They were down by 11 but came back in the second half to outscore the Rebels 41-30. They were able to do so by holding the Rebels to a 41.5 FG% and outrebounded them 41-20.

Nobody has been able to do that to UNLV over the last couple of months, which suggests Nevada has the recipe to cool off the streaking Rebels.

The other reason we like Nevada to win is their impressive 14-2 home record. Their home losses came against Boise State and New Mexico, both of whom are expected to be tournament teams this year.

As good as UNLV has been, we think they come up short against a very good Nevada team on Saturday night.

Why the Aggies Will Lose

This is a very good Utah State squad, leading the conference by one game ahead of the final weekend of the season. The Aggies have won five of six games since they lost to Nevada in February. They were blown out 77-63 at home by the Wolfpack, and now that loss may come back to haunt them this weekend.

The Aggies will be playing how to a very good New Mexico team. While they have lost three of their last five games, the Lobos also have some very impressive wins this season. One came on the road when the edged-out Nevada in February. Another came against Utah State, with New Mexico winning 99-86 at home.

New Mexico and Utah State are two very similar teams. The Lobos lead the conference in scoring (82.2 PPG) but are seventh in opponent scoring (71.2 PPG). The Aggies are second in the conference in scoring (79.6 PPG) and are sixth in opponent scoring (69.1 PPG).

As good as the Aggies are, we think they won’t be able to keep up with the Lobos once again. New Mexico has been beating up on defenses like Utah State all season, and we think they do so again this weekend.
