  • Nathan MacKinnon is second in the league in points with 84
  • Nikita Kucherov leads the league in points (85) and assists (53)
  • Connor McDavid has won the Hart Trophy three times, including last season

The NHL All Star Weekend is here, which means we now is the time to wager on this season’s award winners.

The most prestigious award is the Hart Trophy, which is awarded to the league’s MVP. NHL betting sites have three players as the clear favorites to win the award. Below, we will break down the case for each player, giving you everything you need to pick a winner this season.

Nathan MacKinnon – C Colorado Avalanche

Odds to win Hart Trophy: -135 at FanDuel Sportsbook

Nathan MacKinnon is having one of the best seasons of his impressive career. The center has 31 goals and 53 assists for a total of 84 points. That puts him ahead of pace to break his career point record of 111, which he set last season. The 28-year-old had dealt with some major injuries over the last few seasons, but he has already played 49 games this year.

MacKinnon is currently second in the league in points (84), thanks largely to his play over the last two months. The center has been fantastic, posting 29 points in December and 26 in January. His goal scoring is way up, with 23 coming since December 5. MacKinnon now leads the Avs in goals and assists, helping them post the third most points in the league.

Given MacKinnon’s impressive stats and the fact that he plays on a great Avs team makes him the favorite to win this year’s Hart Trophy.

Nikita Kucherov – RW Tampa Bay Lightning

Odds to win Hart Trophy: +300 at BetMGM Sportsbook

The NHL points leader, Nikita Kucherov is in the midst of one of his best seasons to date. That’s an impressive feat for a 30-year-old that has enjoyed a fantastic career, which includes a Hart Trophy in 2019.

After a slow start to the season, Kucherov has posted over 20 points in the last three months. He now leads the league in points (85) and assists (53) and is fourth in goals (32). His impressive play has helped cover for some of the Lightning’s holes, helping them maintain a top-three spot in the Atlantic.

Kucherov’s case to win a second Hart Trophy is strong. His stats are impressive, but so is the fact that he leads the team with 85 points. That is 29 points higher than the second-closest player, Brayden Point. Tampa is a team that has been in decline, but Kucherov could help them make one more playoff run. If he does, it could result in him winning the Hart Trophy.

Connor McDavid – C Edmonton Oilers

Odds to win Hart Trophy: +450 at BetRivers Sportsbook

Connor McDavid is once again one of the top favorites to win this season’s Hart Trophy. The 27-year-old superstar has already won the award three times, establishing himself as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. While bookmakers have him far behind MacKinnon, it would be a mistake to count McDavid out of the race.

While the center has been good, he has not been as dominant as usual. He has only posted 20+ points in one month this season, making it unlikely he will match his impressive total from last season. His dip in play is one reason the Oilers look like a wildcard team through the first half of the season.

While McDavid has the talent to add points quickly, there is no chance he can top his impressive total from last season. If he comes up short for a large amount and the Oilers remain as a second or third tier playoff team, there is little chance McDavid will add his fourth Hart Trophy.
